SPRING LA Y VOLUNTEER DAY OF SERVICE

Theme: Library Appreciation | Help Your Local Library Prepare for Summer! 
Date: Saturday, May 17 
Location: All LA Y Centers 
Time: 2-3 hours encouraged – specific timeframe up to center leadership 
Who’s Invited: Facility members, program participants, community members, recent volunteers, etc. 
Event Lead: Well-Being Coordinators, AmeriCorps Members, Center Leadership

When reaching out to your local library, ask them if they need support in the following categories:

  • Shelf Organization: Help organize and shelve books, magazines, and other materials. Ensure that items are in the correct order according to the library's cataloging system.
  • Book Cataloging: Assist with cataloging new arrivals, including inputting information into the library's database, labeling books, and processing new materials.
  • Clean and Maintain Spaces: Help keep the library tidy by dusting shelves, cleaning study areas, and ensuring that shared spaces are presentable and comfortable for visitors.
  • Outdoor Beautification: Assist in picking up trash from parking lots, flower beds, sidewalks, etc.; do any landscaping work that may need attention. Work with the library on specific outdoor projects they may need help with. Partner with local organizations/stores to donate supplies if needed (paint, brooms, gloves, etc.).
  • Reading Programs: Volunteer to read to children or lead reading groups. This can encourage young readers and promote literacy.
  • Community Outreach: Help promote library services and events by distributing flyers or engaging with local schools and organizations.

FALL LA Y VOLUNTEER DAY OF SERVICE

Theme: School Appreciation 
Date: TBA 
Location: All LA Y Centers 
Time: 2-3 hours encouraged – specific timeframe up to center leadership 
Who’s Invited: Facility members, program participants, community members, recent volunteers, etc. 
Event Lead: Well-Being Coordinators, Center Leadership, AmeriCorps Members(?)

When reaching out to your local elementary school(s), ask them if they need support in the following categories:

Gardening and Landscaping

  • lanting Flowers and Shrubs: Volunteers can plant colorful flowers or shrubs around the school.
  • Creating a School Garden: Design and implement a vegetable or flower garden.
  • Mulching: Spread mulch in flower beds and around trees to improve aesthetics and health.
  • Weeding: Regular maintenance to keep gardens and landscaped areas tidy.

Clean-Up and Maintenance

  • Trash Pick-Up: Organize a clean-up day to pick up litter around the campus.
  • Power Washing: Clean sidewalks, playgrounds, and building exteriors.
  • Window Washing: Volunteer teams can wash windows to improve natural light.

Painting and Repairs

  • Mural Painting: Collaborate with students or local artists to create murals.
  • Fence or Wall Painting: Refresh the paint on fences, walls, or playground equipment.
  • Furniture Restoration: Repaint or refinish benches and tables in outdoor spaces.

Artistic Enhancements

  • Handcrafted Signage: Make signs that highlight plants, rules, or inspirational quotes.
  • Environmental Initiatives
  • Recycling Stations: Create and label designated recycling areas around the campus.
  • Native Plant Installation: Incorporate native plants to promote local biodiversity.
