Kolar Family YMCA Breaks Ground in Major Milestone towards the Building of the New YMCA Center in Downey

(October 10, 2024, Downey, CA) – An exciting new chapter for the Downey community takes place on October 15 when the new Kolar Family YMCA will break ground marking a milestone in bringing the building to life. The Kolar Family YMCA will play a vital role in enhancing the lives of individuals and families in the Downey area. Construction begins in 2025 with the new  Y center opening in 2026.

The new Kolar Family YMCA (formerly Downey YMCA) will bring a state-of-the-art, highly efficient facility to the community and is destined to be an oasis in the heart of Downey. 

The facility will provide much-needed resources for seniors, youth, and families, including quality childcare programming, sports, and a new swimming pool to address the need for swim training to keep kids safe. Upgraded facility features will be more inclusive for senior and special needs community members.  

Highlights of the new 20,000-square-foot Kolar Family YMCA include: 

• Pickleball courts

• New Child Activity Center

• Indoor Pool

• New Healthy Lifestyle Workout facilities are dedicated to holistic health, including space for mid-body, body, and soul exercises and activities.

• Retrofitted Gymnasium

• ADA Compliant and Inclusive 

The Kolar Family YMCA will serve the community of Downey and the surrounding neighborhoods of South Gate, Paramount, Bell Gardens, Bell, Cudahy, Lynwood, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Bellflower, Huntington Park, Walnut Park, Vernon, and Florence-Graham.
