There was much to be celebrated this past Saturday, June 19, 2021.
Juneteenth was officially made a federal holiday and California reopens allowing the weekend's events to be celebrated with and without masks for those who are fully vaccinated.
Hundreds gathered to commemorate Freedom Day and the end of slavery in the United States. While the streets were filled with visible smiles, live music and dance, the stage was shared amongst a handful of phenomenal speakers, poets, artists and activists reminding us that the fight for equal rights and freedoms is not over. There is still much more work to be done in our streets and across the country.
YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles teamed up with the YMCA of Greater Long Beach to show support and solidary for their African American communities. Visit ymcaLA.org/AARN to learn more about upcoming community events and volunteer opportunities!
